Have you ever had traditional Japanese Wagashi? You may be interested to know that Sendai has its own traditional form of sweets in ‘Sendai Dagashi’.
These sweets originate from the Edo period as a treat designed for the ‘common folk’ as opposed to traditional wagashi which was generally consumed by the upper classes. Now these sweets continue to be popular in the region and make great souvenirs for friends and family!
The type of Dagashi featured in the video is called ‘Daruma Ame’ – it’s crafted to resemble ‘Daruma’ or ‘Dharma’ dolls, traditional Japanese doll thought to bring luck.
We visited Hitachi-ya, in Sendai who offer a range of different Dagashi in all shapes and sizes, be sure to check them out!
